Drain unblocking is the day-to-day job at Glasgow Drainage Pros. We get called out to blocked kitchen sinks, slow showers, toilets that won’t flush, and gully drains that have backed up after heavy rain. Most of these are clearance jobs we can finish in one visit.

The drains we get called out to most
Four jobs make up most of what we see. Each one has its own usual cause and its own usual fix.
Kitchen sinks
Kitchen sinks block more often than anything else. The cause is usually fat and grease building up where the trap meets the wall pipe, with food waste catching on it. We clear most kitchen sinks with rods or a small jetting nozzle, depending on how deep the build-up sits. In Glasgow tenements with a shared waste stack, the blockage can sit in the stack rather than the trap. Two flats sometimes hit the same problem at the same time for exactly that reason.
Baths and showers
Bath and shower drains block on hair and soap scum, sometimes mixed with whatever’s coming down from a shampoo bottle. We usually clear them with rods or a small mechanical cutter that can grip and pull a hair clog out in one piece. Slow-drainers with no full blockage often clear with a thorough rod and a flush, no jetting needed.
Toilets
Toilet blockages split between things that shouldn’t have gone down (wet wipes, nappies, kids’ toys) and things further down the line, like a blocked soil pipe or a partial collapse in the main run. The first kind is usually quick to fix. The second kind needs the cause traced, sometimes with a CCTV drain survey if the engineer can’t see the cause from a manhole.
Outside drains and gullies
Outside drains and gullies clog with leaves, silt, garden debris, and sometimes root ingress from a tree growing nearby. We rod these from the gully or jet them depending on what’s stuck and how deep it is. In older Glasgow streets with mature trees and clay pipework, root ingress is more common than people expect.
How we approach each job
The method we use changes with the situation, not just the type of drain.
One-off blockages
A first-time blocked drain is usually the quickest job we do. We diagnose on arrival, agree the approach, clear the blockage, run water through to confirm the flow, and tidy up before we go. No follow-up survey needed if the flow looks right and the cause is obvious.
Recurring blockages
If a drain blocks every few months, the root cause hasn’t been dealt with. It might be a layer of scale that rods only punch through rather than remove. It might be a section of damaged pipe that catches debris each time water passes. A CCTV survey tells us which, and a proper cleaning job (usually high-pressure jetting) clears the source instead of just the symptom. For more on why this keeps happening, our guide to why a drain keeps blocking walks through the common causes.
Hard-to-reach jobs
Some drains aren’t accessible from the obvious places. Examples include a back-garden gully with no manhole nearby, an internal stack in a tenement flat without an access cover, or a drain running under an extension. These take longer because we have to find a way in first, but they’re a normal part of working on older Glasgow housing.
Suspected pipe damage
If the flow doesn’t return properly after clearance, or if the engineer feels resistance that doesn’t behave like a normal blockage, the next step is a camera survey. Cracks, collapses, displaced joints, and root ingress all behave differently from a soft blockage, and the camera tells you which one you’re dealing with. Any repair work needed after the survey gets quoted separately.

How long drain unblocking takes
Three factors decide the timing on a drain unblocking job: response, blockage type, and access.
Response time
Within standard hours, most Glasgow call-outs reach you the same day. Out-of-hours on-call cover runs on priority. Overflowing drains, toilets that can’t be used, and sewage backups get the fastest response. Slow-draining sinks or backed-up gullies that aren’t actively spilling can usually wait until the following morning, which keeps the night-time rota free for the genuine emergencies. The engineer will give you a realistic time when you book.
Time on site
Most kitchen sink and bathroom blockages take 30 to 60 minutes on site, from arriving to running clean water through. Outside drains and gully clearances can run longer if there’s silt and root mass to deal with. Anything that turns out to be pipe damage rather than blockage gets quoted separately, because the repair is a different job from clearance.
Recurring jobs
Recurring blockages can take a follow-up visit. The first call clears the immediate problem. A camera survey then identifies the underlying cause, and the cleaning or repair work follows from there.
For homes, landlords, and small businesses
Homeowners
Most of our drain unblocking work in Glasgow is for homeowners. You phone in, an engineer turns up, the drain gets cleared, and you pay on the day. The engineer will tell you what was wrong and what was done before leaving.
Landlords and letting agents
For landlords and letting agents, we can attend on behalf of tenants. After the job we send a written description of what was done and what was found, ready for tenancy records or any deposit-related dispute. We need access details and authorisation upfront, which the engineer will confirm when you call to book.
Small commercial premises
Commercial drain unblocking in Glasgow usually fits one of a few patterns. The most common is a grease blockage in a restaurant or takeaway kitchen, which is a jetting job and often a grease-trap clean alongside. Pubs and gyms tend to call us out for floor-drain and trap-gulley blockages, often a mix of paper towel, food waste, and gym-shower lint. Dental practices, beauty salons, and hairdressers hit basin and trap blockages with hair, product residue, and (in dental settings) suction-line debris that needs careful handling. Where opening hours can be worked around, we do.
Drain unblocking across Glasgow
The kind of drain unblocking job we see varies by area. West End back courts in Partick and Hyndland often have gullies buried under paving, and tenement waste stacks are the usual culprit on internal calls there. Southside terraces around Shawlands and Pollokshields tend to have rear soil stacks that are hard to access without going through a neighbour’s flat. East End streets in Dennistoun and Bridgeton, along with the older parts of Maryhill, see a higher share of clay-pipework and root-ingress jobs. City-centre and newer-estate calls are usually quicker because access is better and the pipework is more modern.
